About this position

The Illinois State Police, Forensic Sciences Command, is looking to hire Forensic Scientist Trainees that will specialize in the area of Firearms / Toolmarks. This position participates in the Firearms and Toolmarks Training Program and completes assigned work assignments that prepare the employee for advancement into the role and responsibilities of a Forensic Scientist. The ideal candidate will be able to leverage their academic knowledge, and any applicable experience, to develop and demonstrate their outstanding analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills that are required both within the laboratory and outside, during constant interaction with co-workers, laboratory staff members, and personnel from law enforcement and the court system. Job Responsibilities

40% 1. Under immediate supervision, participates in the Firearms and Toolmarks Training Program in the Illinois State Police (ISP) Forensic Services Division:

  • Develops knowledge, understanding, and technical skills related to the techniques, equipment, and technology used to examine firearms and toolmarks evidence
  • Develops and maintains the ability to perform the techniques and procedures in the collection, reception, handling, preservation and examination of physical evidence
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the techniques, instrumentation, and technology taught via various examinations in specialty areas, including, but not limited to:
    • Bullet and cartridge case comparisons
    • Firearm operating conditions and mechanical principles including understanding of disassembly, reassembly and troubleshooting of malfunctioning firearms
    • Range determinations
    • Serial number restoration
    • Toolmark comparisons and the mechanical principles, understanding and operation of a tool in order to better understand the marks made by the tool and the significance of those marks
    • Casting techniques
  • Completes assigned research projects and work assignments

20% 2. Prepares written reports on the results of examinations, statistical analysis and research projects

20% 3. Establishes and maintains positive, professional relationships with coworkers, other laboratory staff members, law enforcement agency personnel and court system personnel including attorneys and judges:

  • Shares developed knowledge and information related to division programs
  • Participates in laboratory meetings to facilitate accomplishment of program objectives

Participates in general training activities including but not limited to providing and presentation of courtroom testimony, case review, pre-trial conferences, mock trials and observation of actual courtroom procedures and demeanor, maintenance of and performance checking sensitive scientific instruments, chemical preparation and use and quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC)

5% 5. Leverages additional training and learning resources pertinent to the duties of the position to improve expertise in the techniques, equipment and technology used to examine firearms and toolmarks evidence:

  • Reviews books, journals, periodicals, Internet-based articles, and other materials
  • Attends lectures, seminars, conferences and other training and learning activities

Obtains and maintains current on new, trending and/or unproven techniques, equipment and technology used to examine firearms and toolmarks evidence

5% 6. Other duties as required or assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Forensic Science or Natural Science including Agricultural Science, Animal Science, Biochemistry, Biology, Botany, Chemistry, Geology, Medical Technology, Physics, Preliminary Medicine or Zoology.
  • Option A subsumes the laboratory discipline areas of firearms/toolmarks. Latent prints, questioned documents and imaging photography

Preferred Qualifications (In order of significance)

  • Masters or PhD degree in Forensic Science or one of the Natural Sciences (see above)
  • Professional / Work experience in a general laboratory setting
  • Experience demonstrating a mechanical aptitude; that is, developing an understanding of, and then applying, mechanical principles; for example, the assembly, disassembly, and reassembly of a firearm, tool, machine, etc.
  • Experience processing evidence and presenting it, convincingly, in reports, both verbally and in writing
  • Experience screening and/or comparing physical evidence and other materials
  • Experience constructing court exhibits and court demonstration charts
  • Professional / Work experience communicating ideas effectively in oral and written form
  • Professional / Work experience establishing and maintaining satisfactory working relationships
  • Intermediate or Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, and Excel
  • Professional / Work experience analyzing and correlating data
  • Experience in operating firearms safely

Conditions of Employment

  • Successful completion of initial and on-going, random, alcohol and drug screens
  • Successful completion of a background investigation
  • Successful completion of a polygraph examination
  • Ability to maintain credibility in providing courtroom testimony
