The City of Naperville's Water & Wastewater Utility is one of the state’s largest combined utility systems, operating both a water distribution system and a sanitary district with wastewater treatment.


A skilled & motivated professional is now sought for the vital position of Utility Technician II, to perform duties including jet flushing, investigating sanitary sewer problems, flow monitoring, assisting with lift station concerns, and customer service. This position is based out of the Water Service Center facility, and reports directly to the Collection & Pumping Supervisor.

Duties

The Collections & Pumping Utility Tech II (UT-II) operates flushing, pumping, televising and other equipment used in the inspection, maintenance, rehabilitation and repair of the sanitary sewer system; provides a high level of wastewater customer service to residents; prepares maintenance records on all equipment used; locates and inspects sanitary sewers; monitors contractors, construction and rehabilitation projects (including mapping and system analysis); maintains buildings, grounds, inventories and vehicles; performs lift station maintenance work (painting, preliminary investigations of wet-well level and pump operations, bypass pumping, monitoring portable generator performance and other electrical/mechanical duties); monitors work zones for unsafe conditions; maintains and repairs flow meters; and performs a large volume of mapping duties for GIS and capital improvement projects.


This position’s regular work schedule is 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. At the end of the initial 90 days on the job, this individual will be expected to effectively operate a jet flusher as well as perform wastewater customer service duties.


Applicants for this Utility Technician II position must be willing & able to respond to emergencies after normal work hours, and work overtime as needed. Reliable attendance, punctuality and availability are essential to this position.

Qualifications

Qualified candidates must possess at least two years’ responsible equipment operation experience or utility construction experience. Previous municipal water and sewer experience is preferred.


Candidates must have a high school diploma (or equivalent) and a good driving record. A CDL Class B W/N (tanker) must be obtained within three months of hire.


Candidates must also:

  • Be able to obtain an IEPA Collection System operator certification within 2 years of hire.
  • Be able to obtain NASSCO PACP/MACP/LACP certifications within 1 year of hire.
  • Have some basic electrical experience.
  • Possess computer and basic Microsoft Office suite skills.


Additionally, the physical, mobile, and outdoor nature of this position is such that job candidates must be able to walk or stand for an hour or more at a time, pry, lift off & drag 90lb manhole covers (with a tool), safely enter and work in confined spaces, drive a vehicle, and distinguish between colors. Applicants must be able to work in somewhat uncomfortable areas due to dirt, drafts, fumes, noise, insufficient lighting, or lousy weather & temperatures. Top candidates will have demonstrated an ability to work safely and perform duties that require specific precautions to avoid injury.


Examples of Required Physical and Mental Abilities

1. Ability to lift or carry objects weighing over 25 pounds on an intermittent basis. This includes loading and unloading objects and stacking them as necessary.

2. Ability to sustain manual labor, including shoveling by hand, for a minimum of one hour at a time.

3. Pry, lift off & drag 90 lb. manhole covers (with a tool).

4. Ability to effectively enter and work in confined spaces including sanitary manholes and vault and have the ability to wear personal protective equipment, including respiratory protection as necessary.

5. Ability to perform unpleasant duties or deal with hazardous materials such as chlorine for disinfecting, grouting chemicals, odor control chemicals and degreasers.

6. Ability to effectively work with equipment and tools to perform duties while taking all necessary precautions to avoid injury.

7. Ability to climb stairs & ladders and repeatedly climb in and out of large trucks and/or tractors.

8. Ability to twist, stoop, pull, kneel and reach overhead on a consistent basis in order to perform manual labor duties.

9. Ability to maintain balance and walk safely on uneven or slippery surfaces.

10. Ability to work and stay alert during necessary overtime and call-out situations.

11. Ability to read, comprehend & speak English and to demonstrate twelfth grade reading skills.
